Voting Information

North Dakota Residents

A qualified voter of the state is a person who:

  • Is a citizen of the United States;
  • Is eighteen years or older on the day of election;
  • Is a resident of North Dakota; and
  • Is a resident who has resided in the precinct at least thirty days immediately
    preceding any election; and
  • Is able to provide a North Dakota driver’s license, nondriver ID, or tribal ID
    that includes your current residential address and date of birth. If an
    individual’s valid form of identification does not include all the information
    required in NDCC § 16.1-01-04.1(2), or the information is not current, the
    identification must be supplemented by presenting any of the documents as
    outlined in NDCC § 16.1-01-04.1(3)(b).

North Dakota residents do not need to register to vote.

North Dakota requires a valid form of ID to vote. Valid forms of ID that can be used for voting are: 

  • North Dakota Driver’s License
  • North Dakota Non-Driver’s License
  • Tribal ID or Tribal Letter
  • Long-Term Care Certificate

Minnesota Residents

To vote you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen
  • At least 18 years old on Election Day (16 & 17 year olds can pre-register)
  • A resident of Minnesota for 20 days
  • Not currently incarcerated for a felony conviction
  • Not under a court order that revokes your right to vote

MN residents need to register to vote.

To register online you will need:

  • Your Minnesota driver’s license or Minnesota identification card number, or the last four numbers of your Social Security number
  • An email address
  • To be eligible to vote in Minnesota

You will need to re-register if your name or address changes.

Will you need ID to vote? If your voter registration is current and active, you do not need to bring identification. This means you were successfully registered at least 21 days before Election Day and you have not moved or changed names since then. If you need to register or update your registration, or you have not voted in four years or more, you will need to show proof of residence before you vote.
